6.6 Analyzing Message in Race, Crime, and Punishment in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries

The purpose of this article was to give readers more detail and reason about the discrimination on minorities within the criminal justice system. The author pushes for change within our society. Not only by reducing racial discrimination within the system, but also by wanting to abolish the death penalty. I believe there are multiple layers to this message. The author tries to express many different aspects of the racial discrimination, such as incarcerations, types of crimes performed by different races, and types of punishments between races.

  1. Your text sounds controversial in that it touches on different types of discrimination factors and the author sounds persuasive in the argument...

  2. I like that you were able to discern the multiple aspect of the authors message. You also mention that the author pushes for the abolishment of the death penalty, do you think that the death penalty has a tie to racism in the prison system?
